Winter break is filled with food, family and possibly a job? If you are thinking of getting a part time job over break but don’t know where to look, here are a few ideas for you to make some extra cash.

Retail:

Retail stores are always looking for seasonal workers. Why? Because people go insane around the holiday season trying to get everyone the perfect gift.

If you don’t mind working in a stressful environment, then this one might be for you. The good thing is, if you absolutely hate it, you only have to endure it for a short while.

If, on the other hand, you rather like working there, and they like you, you could secure a part time job after your seasonal time is over. Seasonal can definitely be a test run of employees, so if you are planning to try and stay on, get a job close to school so you’d be able to keep it up.

Note: If you are going to try and apply in November, it might already be too late. You really have to stay on top of when they want applications for the seasonal positions and strike on time.

Also keep in mind that requesting days off will be mostly impossible due to black out days, so if you think you will have plans at some point over the holidays that can’t be moved, you probably don’t want to go retail.

Christmas “lumberjack”:

How do people get in the Christmas sprit? With a Christmas tree of course. If you have a desire to be in the great outdoors, chopping down and dragging trees to people’s cars, this one could be for you.

It will require a lot of lifting, so maybe hit the gym first? It sounds like hard work, but someone’s gotta do it.

Decorator:

Have you ever seen those signs for “personal Christmas light hanger”? If you love hanging lights and decorating trees, why not offer your services around your neighborhood?

A lot of older people don’t want to get up on a ladder anymore for obvious reasons, but still want their houses decorated, so that’s where you come in! You’d be surprised by how many people would actually take advantage of this. And if you do it on your own, or maybe with a buddy or two, you’ll be making bank in no time.

Pet sitter:

If you aren’t planning on going anywhere over the holiday season, why not help out the people who are? If you love animals you could offer some pet sitting services to your mom’s book club friends or the old lady down the street with the chickens.

Pet sitting is fun, easy and people usually pay well because they want their pets to be well cared for.

Open a bakery in your kitchen:

Cookies and cakes are a must for cookie exchanges and such, and we all know that people expect homemade items. If you have a passion for baking, spread the love and start cranking out the cookies.

This one will be a lot of fun and a great way to make some extra cash.

Photography:

A lot of families need their pictures taken for Christmas cards, so if you are great at taking pictures, you could try and get a seasonal job with a photographer. You will probably just help with lighting and such, but it would definitely be an awesome experience.

It may also be an awesome way to get into a lot of holiday parties if you are hired to take photos for an event. A chance to get dressed up without having to go through awkward conversations? Sounds good to me. And don’t forget the free food …

Gift wrapper:

There are some people (like me) who can’t wrap gifts to save their life. You should help these poor souls out. A lot of “santas” will consult you for your wrapping expertise.

My old high school used to set up a booth in the mall with a gift-wrapping station, and they were always buzzing with customers. People are always in a rush over the holidays, and don’t have time to wrap the countless gifts they just blew a bunch of money on.

The best way to go about this would be to get a few friends to help and get some cute wrapping paper and boxes to put the gifts in to make the wrapping process easier.

Now you might be thinking “but a lot of stores have gift bags,” and the reality is that this is happening less and less, which makes shoppers frustrated. You would make their day by offering to take the burden of wrapping off their hands.

Remember to apply as soon as possible if there is something that interests you, and also to make sure that the place is actually hiring for seasonal (they will get really annoyed if you quit after three weeks when they thought you’d be there for longer).

If you are having trouble finding openings, you can always consult a website like SnagAJob to help you out.
